(AP) The NFL has suspended Minnesota Vikings fullback Jerome Felton for three games for violating the league's policy on substance abuse.

The punishment was announced Monday without disclosing details.

Felton made the Pro Bowl last season after blocking for many of teammate Adrian Peterson's 2,097 yards rushing. He signed a three-year contract with the club in March worth as much as $7.5 million, including $2 million guaranteed. Felton bounced around with three NFL teams until breakthrough last season with the Vikings.

He has been recovering from an appendectomy done two weeks ago. His suspension takes effect Saturday, and he must miss the games at Detroit on Sept. 8, at Chicago on Sept. 15 and against Cleveland on Sept. 22. He'll be eligible to return to the active roster the day after.
