(AP) J.R. Celski won the 'A' final of the 1,500 meters at the U.S. Olympic short track trials, and Jessica Smith won the women's race.

Celski's final Friday night included falls by Travis Jayner and Kyle Carr. Celski emerged unscathed, shaking his right hand in the air as he crossed the finish line first.

Smith won the women's 1,500 'A' final over Emily Scott.

The skaters were set to compete in a second series of semifinal heats followed by A, B and C finals in front of a packed house at the Utah Olympic Oval. Skaters earns points in each race that go toward their cumulative totals, which helps decide the five-men and three-women team for next month's Sochi Olympics.
