John Castronuovo

John Michael Castronuovo of East Northampton Street, Wilkes-Barre, died
Monday at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains
TownshipBorn Dec. 30, 1911, in New York City, he was the son of the late
Michael and Antoinette Pontolillo Castronuovo.
He was a U.S. Coast Guard, Merchant Marines veteran of World War II. He was
a first mate engineman on the Murmansk run in the North Atlantic from June 11,
1943 to Aug. 15, 1945. He received a medal and written letter of recognition
from the Russian government for his services.
He was a member of the Laborer’s International Union of North America,
Local 1000.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Hazle McNeal, in 1992.
