Game Commission Northeast Region director Daniel Figured announced that the scheduled stocking of ring-necked pheasants on all lands of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA), in Pike and Monroe counties, has been discontinued until further notice as a result of the federal government shutdown.
Hunting and other activities are prohibited in national parks and on other federal lands while the shutdown in ongoing.
Pheasants that had been slated for stocking on DEWA lands for the Junior Pheasant Hunt will be redistributed to other game lands in the Northeast Region, including State Game Lands 159 and 236, in Wayne and Susquehanna counties.
“The Game Commission’s goal is to adequately distribute these birds in locations with quality habitat and optimal hunter accessibility,” Figured said. “Future stocking of pheasants on federal lands is dependent upon allowing hunter access and we will adjust our pheasant-stocking activities as the situation dictates.”
Hunters are reminded that all state game lands remain open, as do other state lands such as state forests and those portions of state parks normally open to hunting. Information on pheasant stocking locations can be found in the 2013-14 Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest, or by visiting the Game Commission’s website, www.pgc.state.pa.us.
