Joshua Kalna, pictured above, can thank his twin brother Zachary, both from Shavertown, for bagging his first buck on the opening day of the rifle deer season. The Kalna brothers went hunting for their first deer season with their stepfather, Dan Fuller, and family friend Don Stroud.

Opening day also coincided with the Kalna’s 14th birthday, making for an extra special time. Once they were in the woods in the Red Rock area, Zach sat in a blind with his stepfather and Josh sat with Stroud. Not long into the hunt, Zack saw a buck approach and, in his excitement, shouted to Fuller, who was seated right next to him.

The startled buck ran away directly toward Josh and Stroud in the other blind, where Josh downed it with one shot from his .243 Remington.

Call it a birthday buck from Zack to Josh, one that the twins will remember forever. Their mother, Lisa Fuller, sent in the photo and the details of the hunt.

If you have a deer season photo of a successful junior hunter (age 16 and under), email it to Please include hunter’s full name, age, hometown and any details about the hunt.
