The Pennsylvania Kayak Fishing Association held it’s first annual PKFA RiverFest Charity Kayak Fishing Tournament on June 21 launching from Nesbitt Park. Association president John Oast said swift, dark-stained water made conditions challenging and the high flow rate made it difficult to fish from a kayak. But that didn’t deter the anglers, especially Louette Ortenzi of Lebanon who caught a 14.5-inch smallmouth to capture first place.

The PKFA is a branch of the Suskie Bassmasters and will be holding two more tournaments on the river this summer (see below).

PA Bass Casters tournament at Harveys Lake (26 boats; a total of 98 fish were weighed totalling 239 lbs.;)

1. Joe Zombex and John Kelley - 15 lbs., 12 oz.

2. Andy Johnson and Jerry Halchak - 13 lbs., 73 oz.

3. Ed Fore (single rider) - 12 lbs., 79 oz.

4. Joe and Ken Kosloski - 12 lbs., 71 oz.

PA Bass Bandits tournament at Harveys Lake on June 15 (High catch of largemouth and smallmouth reported; top lures were Senkos, tubes, spinnerbaits and crankbaits; water temperature was 68 degrees):

2. Shaun Kucharski - 3 fish, 8.18 lbs.

3. Mike Zelinski Sr. - 3 fish, 8.08 lbs.

The Suskie Bassmasters will host a Wednesday tournament each week on the Susquehanna River beginning June 18. The tournament will be held at the boat launch in Nesbitt Park and registration begins at 4:30 p.m. Launch is at 6 p.m. and weigh-in is at 9 p.m. For more information, visit:




The Harveys Lake Wednesday Night Bass Tournament will run weekly, from June 18 to Sept. 10. The championship round will include the top 30 anglers based on total weight over 12 weeks and will be worth $1,200. The lunker tournament (each angler weighing one fish) will begin at 6 p.m. with weigh-in at 9 p.m. at the launch. Registration is at 4:30 p.m. Entry fee is $15 with a one-time $10 fee to be eligible for the championship round. The Nanticoke Conservation Club will hold a Susquehanna River Bass Tournament on Saturday, June 28 from 6 a.m. to noon at the boat launch on the Hunlock Creek Access along state Route 11 in Union Township. The Blytheburn Lake Association will hold two bass tournaments at Blytheburn Lake on Blytheburn Road in Mountain Top from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, Sept. 14.
