- Last week Sandy Goodwin observed a male Baltimore oriole consuming pieces of eggshell. “I’ve read about female birds eating eggshells in the spring, and know

that chicken farmers often have crushed oyster shells available for

their poultry. However, I’ve not heard of a male bird eating this

substance,” Goodwin wrote.
