After a day off on Monday, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins resumed practice on Tuesday with a positive vibe.

It’s one they’ll carry all week, thanks to Sunday’s 3-0 win over Lehigh Valley.

“You have a long week it’s always better to end the weekend with a win,” said winger Bobby Farnham, who had a goal on Sunday. “If you end it with a loss it just kind of sits with you all week, but with a win, you go through it feeling better.”

But that’s not to say the Penguins don’t have work to do.

Goaltender Matt Murray saved the day on Sunday when he staved off a hot start by the Phantoms, giving his teammates time to find their game. Head coach John Hynes acknowledged that if it wasn’t for Murray’s play, the outcome of the game may have been different.

It wasn’t until later that the Penguins found their groove, and getting off to a better start is something Hynes intends to work on this week.

“The way we’re approaching this week is we have to make sure our game is getting better,” he said. “Over the course of the weekend it wasn’t as good of team play that we want to have.”

That’s why Hynes wants to see more of what the Penguins did in the second half of Sunday’s game than the opening 10 minutes.

“As the game went on we made better decisions and played more with the identity we want. It was still a 50-50 game until we got that second goal, and once we got the lead we played very well,” he said. “We have to build off that.”

The Penguins can also build off the fact that despite Lehigh Valley giving them fits all season, they finally showed they can dominate the Phantoms. That could be important with four more games against Lehigh Valley down the stretch.

“We’ve had some close games against them this year and they had our number a couple times,” Farnham said. “Considering we play them four more times, it was nice to get a win like that.”

NOTEBOOK

– D Derrick Pouliot was recalled to Pittsburgh on Tuesday and C Andrew Ebbett was sent down. Ebbett has 38 points in 34 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, while Pouliot posted 24 points in 31 games. Hynes doesn’t think his blueline offensive production will suffer with the loss of Pouliot.

“We have several NHL-caliber defensemen that can move the puck, and we have a guy like Danny Syvret back there so we feel real comfortable,” he said.

– Hynes said he believed the AHL is taking a look at the hit by Phantoms forward Zack Stortini on Bobby Farnham along the boards during Sunday’s game. Farnham, who wasn’t injured on the play, said he watched replays of the hit. “I thought it was pretty questionable. More blindside than usual,” Farnham said. “I wasn’t expecting that, but the league will look at it and make the decision.”

– On the injury front, Bryan Rust skated on Tuesday and is day-to-day, as are Conor Sheary and Barry Goers. Scott Harrington had a “maintenance” day and didn’t practice. Hynes said Rust, Sheary and Harrington aren’t dealing with anything significant.
