Gibbons latest Penguin to re-sign

The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed forward Brian Gibbons to a one-year contract on Monday.

Gibbons’s contract is a two-way deal worth $550,000 at the NHL level.

Gibbons, 25, completed his second season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, scoring 30 points (8G-22A) in 70 games. During the 2013 Calder Cup playoffs, Gibbons added three goals and five assists for eight points in 15 games.

After signing as an undrafted free agent on April 4, 2011, Gibbons scored 30 points (11G-19A) for WBS in 70 games during his first season as a professional in 2011-12. He also appeared in eight playoff games for the Penguins that season, registering eight penalty minutes. In 140 career AHL regular-season games, he has scored 19 goals and 41 points for 60 points.

The 5-foot-8, 170-pound center played college hockey at Boston College, where he appeared in 160 games, scoring 164 points (56G-108A) and adding a plus-87 rating to go with 241 penalty minutes. Gibbons won two NCAA National Championships as a member of the Eagles in 2008 and 2010.

As a freshman in 2007-08, the Braintree, Mass., native won Beanpot Most Valuable Player honors for his performance the annual tournament, tallying four points (2G-2A). During his senior season in 2010-11, he finished second on the team with 51 points (18G-33A) and won the John “Snooks” Kelley Memorial Award as the player who best typifies Boston College hockey. He also earned the program’s Academic Excellence Award as the senior with the highest grade point average.
