The Pittsburgh native came to the Penguins as a free agent during the summer of 2008 with an established pro resume. Thomas, 30, spent the previous two seasons in the Phoenix organization and bounced between the Coyotes and San Antonio Rampage.
In 2007-08 he scored 24 goals and 52 points in 75 games with the Rampage, and he had appeared in 40 NHL games with the Coyotes by the time he joined the Penguins.
During 2008-09, Thomas appeared in 39 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, scoring eight goals. He also played in 16 games with Pittsburgh that season and registered two goals.
During the next four seasons, Thomas bounced between the AHL and NHL along with a brief stop in Sweden. He appeared in 31 NHL games over parts of two seasons with Florida, and scored a career-high 27 goals with San Antonio in 2011-12. This season in the KHL Thomas has 11 goals and 30 points in 54 games.
