The Wheeling Nailers wrapped up a big week en route to clinching their 12th playoff berth in their 22-year history. The Nailers currently own a 38-26-1-5 record through 70 games, which is good for 82 points and a seventh-place position in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference standings. On Saturday night, Wheeling completed its home season, winning at least 20 games for the fourth consecutive campaign and fifth time in the last six.
In addition to the postseason berth, goaltender Mike Condon was named ECHL Goaltender of the Week for March 31-April 6. Condon, 23, earns the honor for the third time this season after posting a 3-0-0 record with a nearly perfect 0.34 goals against average and a .989 save percentage. On the season, Condon has appeared in 38 games with Wheeling, backstopping he and the team to a 22-14-4 record while registering a 2.24 goals against average, a .928 save percentage and five shutouts.
Also, defenseman Mike Ratchuk was named to the All-ECHL Second Team. Ratchuk, 26, is currently enjoying the best season of his career, as he has set personal bests with 15 goals, 27 assists and 42 points while appearing in 67 games. His 15 goals and six game-winning tallies are the most among ECHL defensemen, while his 42 points rank third and his six power-play goals rank fourth in that category among fellow blueliners.
The Nailers also handed out their end-of-season awards last week. Shavertown’s Patrick McGrath took home the fan favorite award, while Zack Torquato was offensive MVP. Condon was named defensive MVP.
