PLYMOUTH — Wyoming Valley West needed a win Tuesday against North Pocono
to stay in contention for a berth in the District 2 playoffs, and got it.
   
“We knew our backs were to the wall,” Wyoming Valley West coach Jack
Kablick said.
    The Spartans delivered, winning in three games by scores of 15-9, 10-15,
15-13.
   
Now 9-3, Wyoming Valley West has the fourth best record in the conference,
good enough for a berth in the district playoffs scheduled for May 18.
   
North Pocono (8-3) will have beat Tunkhannock Thursday to keep its playoff
hopes alive.
   
If North Pocono defeats Tunkhannock, it will meet Wyoming Valley West
Tuesday May 16, to determine who will get the final District 2 playoff berth.
   
Leading Wyoming Valley West against North Pocono were seniors John Kablick,
who scored 15 kills, Mike Muchler, who got 10 kills, and Gary WIlliams, who
added eight kills.
   
Also for the Spartans, John Johnson contributed 21 assists from his setter
position, while Tim Laquintano dominated the net with seven blocks.
   
In the back row, a host of Spartans took turns providing accurate passing,
hustling and sprawling for digs. They included, James Lacey, John Shahoney
Louis Weber and Kevin Kerr.
   
John Andraka, who provided a devastating jump serve for Valley West, scored
six aces.
   
In the third and decisive game, North Pocono went out in front 2-0 early,
but Valley West soon took a commanding 12-6 lead.
   
Then North Pocono rallied to pull to within 12-11. A kill by Muchler put
the Spartans up by two.
   
A key block by North Pocono’s Jesse Gallagher and Tom Graham pulled the
Trojans to within one again, 13-12.
   
A North Pocono miscue gave the Spartans a 14-12 lead and put the game at
match-point, and a kill by Williams put the game away for Wyoming Valley West.
   
For North Pocono, Brian Quinn scored nine kills, while Jesse Gallagher got
eight kills and nine service points. Jason Sible and Jason Hockenberry each
got 11 blocks, while Hockenberry also added 16 assists. Chris Summa scored 11
service points.
   
Tunkhannock 2,
   
Crestwood 0
   
TUNKHANNOCK — Led by the hitting of Jeff Howe and Brian Heck, Tunkhannock
defeated Crestwood 15-2, 15-1.
   
Also for Tunkhannock (10-1), Matt Slacktish provide strong serving, while
Tom Shaver dominated the net blocking and furnished the hitters with accurate
sets from his setting position.
   
With the loss, Crestwood fell to 4-7.
   
Tunkanock won the junior varsity match 10-15, 15-4, 15-4.
   
Wyoming Area 2, Coughlin 0
   
WILKES-BARRE — Wyoming Area improved to 2-9 by handling Coughlin by scores
of 15-8 and 15-13.
   
Coughlin coach Matt Wisnewski said he got excellent setting from Eric
Speicher, excellent net play from Randy Nichols and good defense from Dave
Panaway.
   
Coughlin (2-9) won the junior varsity match 9-15, 15-10, 15-2.
   
Dallas 2, W.S. Tech 0
   
PRINGLE — Joe Hayer’s eight points and Jeff Chopick’s 10 assists led
Dallas two a two-game win over host West Side Tech by scores of 15-4, 15-3.
   
Don Holdredge had five kills for Dallas (4-7), while Adam Nicely added
four.
   
West Side Tech (0-11) was led by Don Korus with four blocks and two kills
and B.J. Reese with four saves. Shawn Henninger had two blocks.
   
Dallas won the junior varsity match 12-15, 15-7, 15-9.
   
Lake-Lehman 2, Hazleton 0
   
LEHMAN TWP. — R.J. Brooks led Lake-Lehman with nine kills and a dig as the
Black Knights beat Hazleton Area by scores of 15-6, 15-3.
   
Jaremy Baranowski contributed 24 assists, three kills, two blocks and a dig
for Lake-Lehman (11-0). Jeremy Fleeger added five kills and five digs for the
Black Knights, while Mike Yablonski totaled four kills, three aces and a dig.
   
Lehman’s Brian Welby provided solid back-row defense and accurate serving,
finishing the match with three digs and 14 service points, including two aces.
   
With the loss Hazleton fell to 2-9.
   
Nanticoke 2, Abnington 0
   
CLARKS SUMMIT — Nanticoke’s Jody Yozviak hammered down six kills, while
teammate Ed Lukowski added nine blocks as the Trojans downed Abington Heights
15-10, 15-9.
   
Also for Nanticoke (6-6) Jason Warren provided strong serving.
   
For Abington (6-6), Andy Frye scored 13 kills and Steve Benben got seven,
while Trevar Scheuch added three kills and 23 assists.
