WILKES-BARRE — The parents of a 22-year-old Tunkhannock man killed in a
1991 electrocution accident have been awarded more than $1.3 million in a
settlement to be paid by two Luzerne County companies named in a wrongful
death suit.

The plaintiffs, Richard and Ann Marie Altenhain, whose son, Steven
Altenhain, was killed July 24, 1991, were awarded $1,375,000 to be paid by ESP
Concrete Pumping Inc. of Sweet Valley and A.R. Popple Equipment Rental of
Laflin. The companies, both named in the suit, agreed to pay the Altenhains
through their respective insurance companies.
The settlement was agreed upon on March 27 after the case had gone through
seven days of testimony before Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge Hugh
F. Mundy.

The UGI Corporation, which also was named in the suit, settled on the first
day of the trial, giving the Altenhains $25,000 for damages and injuries from
Steven Altenhain’s death.

Altenhain, who was employed by CDC Construction in Lake Winola at the time
of the accident, was killed while working on the Wade Run Creek project on
Denison Street in Swoyersville. He was electrocuted when a concrete pumper
truck that he was touching came in contact with an electrical device on a
nearby utility pole.
