WILKES-BARRE – Police have identified a man they believe was the driver of
a car that struck and seriously injured a man on East Division Street early
Tuesday morning.

Chief Gerry Dessoye said the man, whom he would not identify, called police
Thursday and “provided information” that led police to believe he was the
driver. The man was interviewed by investigators and his vehicle, a Chevrolet
Corsica, was seized.
Dessoye said he expects charges will be filed, possibly today. The
suspect’s identity will be released then.

Police have been searching for the driver since Wilton Michael Lowman was
struck outside the Milestone Pizza restaurant and bar at about 12:45 a.m.
Tuesday.

Mike Gilroy, co-owner of the restaurant and friend of Lowman’s, said Lowman
was clearing snow from his car when he was struck from behind. He suffered
such a severe injury to his right leg that doctors were unable to save it
below the knee, Gilroy said.

Lowman remained at Community Medical Center in Scranton as of Thursday
afternoon. A woman who answered the phone in his room said he was not
available to speak to a reporter.

Dessoye said police continue to investigate the crash and have not
determined what charges will be filed against the driver. “A lot of work goes
in to something like this. We have to revisit the accident to determine the
appropriate charges.”
