RE: April 25, “Rec Board taking park plan forward”

Dear Editor,

I agree with the Urban Research and Development Corporation’s plan to develop the Abington Community Park area. This plan will improve existing soccer fields, improve lighting, restrooms, and parking and make more opportunities for families.
The current soccer fields have poor drainage. The result of the poor drainage is that the fields get very muddy. Games get cancelled, and the schedule gets mixed up. I know this from personal experience. Hopefully, the improvements to the soccer fields will fix this problem.
Secondly, the fields have no lighting. If teams were able to play night games there would be more fields open during the day. Teams wouldn’t have to wait for fields. Teams also could practice later in the day with the lighting.
Also, the current bathrooms are porta-potties. They’re small. They have no sinks. Only one person at a time can use the bathroom, and so there’s often a line.
The parking that is there now is dangerous and dusty. The lot is small and rocky. People have to park in the grass and along the road. That creates a traffic jam and dangerous conditions, especially because so many kids are around.
Next, the improvements will create a place where families can relax and have fun. The proposed “Tot Lot” will be a place for kids who are not playing sports. Hiking trails and picnic areas will give families a place to spend time together outdoors.
In conclusion, the plan will improve playing fields for local teams. It will improve safety for families who go to games. It will also provide places for families to go.

Sincerely,
