Seven Wyoming Valley swimmers received at-large bids to the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships following their performances at the District 2 meet this weekend. PIAA officials released the names of the 16 time qualifiers per event Saturday for the state championships held March 12-15 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.
The swimmers will join the automatic qualifiers. District champions in Class 3A and Class 2A boys received a golden ticket to PIAAs. The top two finishers in Class 2A girls claimed qualifying spots.
Tunkhannock’s Ashley Kasmierski will join teammate Morgan Manglaviti at Class 2A states with a qualifying swim in the 100 breaststroke. Kasmierski finished the race in 1:09.75.
Six Class 2A boys swimmers will take their marks in Lewisburg.
District champion Tunkhannock added three more states bids to its two gold-medal relay runs. Matt Miller had two time qualifiers. He will swim in the 100 fly with a 54.89 second seed time, and Miller posted the fourth-best time qualifier in the 100 free with a 48.71 second district time. The Tigers’ Joe Moffitt will compete in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.51 mark.
After winning the 50 free, Crestwood’s Chris Lukasewski will join teammate Josh Grzech in the 100 free. Lukasewski won a bronze with a 49.14 second time.
Holy Redeemer’s Connor Thole will suit up in the 100 back with a 56.95 second seed time. Reid Luksic represents Dallas in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.51 mark. Coughlin’s Terry Vrabec will also make a presence in the 100 breaststroke, registering a 1:03.43 time.
Wyoming Valley West’s Ed Zawatski has the top Class 3A seed time in the 50 free. Zawatski won the district crown in 20.8 seconds.
The swimmers will join the area’s divers that also received at-large bids because of their scores. Three girls divers – Pittston Area’s Sierra Williams, Wyoming Area’s Kiersten Lasher, Dallas’ Kiera Gross – will jump off the platform at Bucknell. Dallas’ Patrick Madaya and Wyoming Seminary’s Andriy Molchanov join district record holder Matthew Edkins, of Lake-Lehman, in boys Class 2A diving.
No District 2 Class 3A swimmers were name time qualifiers.
Four WVC teams continue in the state brackets, with two playing first round games Friday and the other two Saturday.
Class 3A teams are on the court Friday, as Pittston Area and GAR open tournament play.
The Patriots are the District 2 runners-up and will play Bishop McDevitt (26-2), the third seed from District 3. That game is at 6 p.m. at Wyoming Area, and is followed by a Class A boys game between District 2 champ Old Forge and District 11 runner-up Piux X.
As the third seed from District 2, the Grenadiers go to Shikellamy High School to play District 4 champ Shamokin (22-3). That game is at 7:30 p.m., following the Class 2A girls game between District 4 champ Mount Carmel and District 2 third seed Montrose.
On Saturday, District 2 champions Hazleton Area and Meyers will start toruney action.
The Cougars are in the Class 4A bracket, opening against District 11 third seed Stroudsburg (16-11) at 5 p.m. at Berwick Middle School.
The Mohawks get a matchup with Towanda (22-3), the third-place team from District 4. Game time is 6 p.m. at Wilkes’ Marts Center.
Holy Redeemer, the third seed from District 2, opens PIAA Tournament play Saturday.
The Royals face District 4 champ Mifflinburg (20-5) at Shikellamy High School in Sunbury. The 6 p.m. tip is the first game of a doubleheader. The second tilt is a boys Class 2A game between District 4 champ Lewisburg and District 2 third-place entry Mid Valley.
FORT PIERCE, Fla — Misericordia opened its baseball with a split of two games Sunday, topping LaRoche 4-2 before losing to Elizabethtown 9-8.
Ryan Dorosh tossed a complete game two-hitter against LaRoche. Miles Westrich had two hits and drove in two runs in the win.
Kyle Lindsay had three hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs against Elizabethtown, while Mike Comerford added two doubles and an RBI.
