The Chicory House Concert Series presents The Asylum Street Spankers, an Austin-based wildly eclectic band whose musical universe includes Texas swing, ragtime, two-step parlor dances, jazz, vaudeville, blues and more genres from early 20th-century musical styles. In their latest, ninth album, they present a set of rousing gospel music followed by a set of songs about the joys of sinning.
The concert takes place Friday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. at Arts YOUniverse, 47 North Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre. Admission is $15 and $12 members. Tickets are sold at the door. For details, call 570.825.8772 or www.chicoryhouse.com.
The band was formed in Austin, TX, and derives their names from the former Asylum Street where they did much of their busking?? in the early nineties. They added the old musician term “spanker,” which denotes someone “who plays an instrument vigorously and proficiently.”
The Chicory House is a non-profit organization entirely run by a staff of volunteers.
