WILKES-BARRE — By now, the expectations are perfectly clear for Hanover Area. They don’t really need any reminders.

The Hawkeyes won their 32nd straight game in Wyoming Valley Conference play Thursday — 11-1 over Meyers at Gibby Field — and have a shot at a third consecutive unbeaten regular season.

“We’re trying to not even bring up what’s happened in the past,” Hanover Area coach Mike Zapotoski said. “We’re just taking it day-by-day. We know if we play like we can, good things will happen.”

It’s a different approach than they’ve taken in the past. When the Hawks lost in the district semifinals in 2012, they immediately resolved to win the district title in 2013. Their run again ended in the semifinals last year, but the bulk of that lineup is back this spring.

That experience has been particularly valuable in light of the miserable weather that has kept teams throughout the county indoors for all of March and most of April.

Hanover Area (4-0, Division 3) had seven players in Thursday’s lineup who started in the postseason a year ago.

Of those, Nick Deno shined brightest against the Mohawks, striking out 13 in six innings while allowing just two hits. He also went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI at the plate.

With the score just 3-0 in the bottom of the third, Zapotoski called for an intentional walk of top Meyers hitter Matt DeMarco, loading the bases with two outs. His trust in Deno paid off as the senior struck out the next batter to get out of the jam.

“Nick threw really well,” Zapotoski said. “He’s a competitor. I went out there and just told him what I was thinking and he said, ‘Yeah, I’ll just get the next guy.’ We knew he’d come through in that spot.”

John Wickiser, Mike Sulcoski, Jack Windt and Jake Peters also added two hits for the Hawkeyes. Mike Bugonowicz finished with three RBI.

It was just the third game of any kind for the Mohawks (0-2, Division 3) and the first of the year on their home field. The rust showed in the form of errors in the field and on the basepaths.

Cal Lisman drove in the lone run for Meyers.

“Defensively, we haven’t been playing well,” Meyers coach Matt Skrepenak said. “We made too many physical mistakes, too many mental mistakes. Way too many physical mistakes, way too many mental mistakes.”

Tunkhannock 4,

Holy Redeemer 3 (8 inn.)

The Tigers (3-0) pushed across an unearned run in the top of the eighth to earn the road win in extra innings. Brett Soltysiak hit a two-run homer and Chase Knott threw 3.2 innings of one-hit ball for the win in relief.

Eric Kerr drove in two runs for the Royals (1-2) while striking out nine in 4.1 innings.

Pittston Area 10,

Wyoming Valley West 7

The Patriots (1-1) were sparked by Joe Champi (3-4, 4 RBI) in a slugfest vs. the Spartans. Michael Schwab finished 3-for-4 and went the distance on the mound.

Evan McCue and Brandon Reyes led Valley West (0-3) with three hits and two RBI apiece.

Wyoming Area 9, Dallas 7

The Warriors (2-1) exploded for eight runs in the fourth to rally back from a 6-1 deficit. Joey Gavenonis and Jeremy Zezza drove in two runs apiece while freshman Lucas Jurchak earned tthe in in relief.

Jordan McCrumm struck out seven in 3.2 innings for the Mountaineers (0-2).

Coughlin 12,

Crestwood 2 (5 inn.)

Chase Nowak and Eric Adamczyk both went 2-for-4 with two RBI to help lead the Crusaders (2-2). Dave Parsnik finished 3-for-3 and Adam Giovanelli earned the win on the mound.

Curt Yenchik and Derek Distasio had three hits apiece for the Comets (1-2).

Hazleton Area 6, Berwick 0

The Cougars (3-0) hit two home runs to stay unbeaten with a home win over the Bulldogs (2-1).

Sal Biasi picked up the win while Jordan DiValerio took the loss.
