KINGSTON — Jeremy Sabecky slid comfortably into third. He popped up with a smile and was promptly greeted with a high five from his coach, John Milius.

Yeah, things were looking fun again for Wyoming Valley West.

Sabecky had cleared the bases for a three-run triple on the play, a two-out gem that broke Thursday’s game with Coughlin wide open for a 9-0 win at Spartan Stadium.

Just a few weeks ago, the Spartans were 0-4 in WVC play, culminating with a devastating forfeit loss to these same Crusaders in 10 innings.

Valley West had taken a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 10th of that first meeting when starter Bill Gregory, still on the mound, came back out for the 10th inning, triggering a forfeit for using an illegal pitcher. PIAA rules limit pitchers to a maximum of nine innings in a game.

Since then? Valley West has rattled off six straight wins in league play, including Thursday’s decisive rematch.

“It all fell on me,” Milius said of the gaffe in April. “I was more concerned about pitch count than the actual innings. An oversight on my part. I’m just glad we’ve been able to overcome it.”

Milius credited the attitude of his players for the ensuing hot streak, not allowing the team to wallow after a frustrating result.

“They were very supportive of me,” Milius said. “They just came up to me and said, ‘Hey, Coach — you’re human, too. You’re only one person.’ They really picked me up.

“They’re tough-nosed kids. Nothing fancy. Just come here and go to work. They bring their tools, and when it’s done, it’s done.”

The turnaround so far mirrors Valley West’s 2013 campaign, which began at 0-3 but ended with another district title and a trip to the state quarterfinals.

There’s still plenty of work to be done to get back to the state tournament, but Thursday’s game was a step in the right direction.

Logan Zavada threw a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 for his fourth win of the WVC season.

Sabecky and Evan McCue (3-for-4, double, RBI), both returning starters from that 2013 squad, came through at the plate. Gregory, playing third base this time around, went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Ryan Hogan (triple) and Larry Anderscavage both chipped in two hits and an RBI.

It was Sabecky’s triple, however, that set the tone.

Scoreless through three innings, the Spartans had much better success against Coughlin starter Dave Marriggi the second time through the order. It started with Hogan, who launched a triple that was headed for the traffic on Pierce Street if not for the high fence in right field.

Anderscavage, who missed much of the early season while recovering from a foot injury, singled him home for the game’s first run. The Spartans (6-4) proceeded to load the bases, but Marriggi nearly got of the jam down just 1-0, working a 2-2 count against Sabecky with two outs.

The Spartans senior sent a hanging curve out toward the fence to make it 4-0, and the Spartans simply built from there.

“That broke the game,” Crusaders coach Moe Rodzinak said. “And it was one pitch. One pitch where the kid cleared the bases. Turned the tide of the whole game.”

Coughlin (6-4) managed to draw six walks against Zavada, but Rodzinak said he would have preferred a more aggressive approach at the plate.

“I don’t want to take anything away from their pitcher, but we weren’t even here today,” Rodzinak said. “Kids were not swinging the bats today. Just weren’t mentally tough today. Gotta work on it tomorrow, put a lot of time in.”

Mike Wozniak, Marriggi and Chase Nowak all singled for the Crusaders.

Berwick 8, Pittston Area 3

Jordan DiValerio struck out five in a complete-game victory. Zach Andress and Paul Jay Wiegand each had three hits, a double and three RBI for the Bulldogs (8-2).

Mike Carey and Pat McGinty had two hits apiece for the Patriots (5-5).

Tunkhannock 10,

Lake-Lehman 3

Sean Soltysiak had a huge day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI. Ben Swilley and Cody Brown both had two hits and two RBI for the Tigers (4-6).

Scott Bean homered for the Black Knights (3-7). The game was scheduled to be played at Lake-Lehman but was moved to Tunkhannock because of field conditions.

Wyoming Area 7,

Holy Redeemer 4

Evan Musto went 3-for-3 with an RBI as the Warriors (4-5) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to hold off the host Royals. Tyler Mitchell hit a solo shot in the win.

Hoy Redeemer (2-7) got four doubles, including one from Jim Strickland, who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Nanticoke 13,

Wyoming Seminary 0 (5 inn.)

The Trojans (8-2) exploded for 10 runs in the third for a five-inning victory on senior day. Mike Malshefski went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI to lead the offense while Josh Benscoter threw a two-hit shutout.

Asa Saidman and Colin Toggas both singled for the Blue Knights (2-7).
