PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Pat Venditte made his RailRiders season debut a memorable one.

The switch-pitcher who was just promoted from Double-A Trenton fanned all five batters he faced to earn the win in the RailRiders’ 3-2 triumph over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday.

Relievers Venditte and Danny Burawa combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless and hitless relief. Jose Pirela’s eighth-inning RBI groundout delivered the winning run for the RailRiders.

While a run-scoring groundout might not sound like highlight-reel material, Venditte’s outing was. He came on in the sixth to relieve Zach Nuding and fanned the left-handed hitting Corey Brown to end the inning.

In the seventh, he struck out the side, getting the left-handed hitting Garin Cecchini and right-handers Dan Butler and Mike McCoy. He opened the bottom of the eighth with a strikeout of lefty Justin Henry. Venditte exited after throwing 27 pitches, 17 for strikes. He did not allow a baserunner and struck out all five batters he faced — three while pitching left-handed and the other two while throwing right-handed.

Burawa recorded the final five outs, pitching around a pair of ninth-inning walks by inducing a game-ending double play grounder from Cecchini.

Pirela’s RBI came against reliever Rich Hill (1-2), who hit Kyle Roller with a pitch to begin the eighth inning. Zelous Wheeler then singled to put two runners on base, and Dean Anna’s fielder’s choice left runners on the corners with one out.

Ryan Lavarnway homered into the left field bullpen for the PawSox to tie the game in the sixth inning, his second of the season. The shot chased SWB starter Zach Nuding from the game after 5 2/3 innings of work.

Catcher Jose Gil had a two-run single in the second inning to open the scoring. Pirela, Adonis Garcia and Ramon Flores each had two of the RailRiders’ 10 hits. Alex Hassan had a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the third inning put the PawSox on the scoreboard.

Rubby De La Rosa had a season-high eight strikeouts and allowed nine hits in his five innings of work.

Game three of the series is Monday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Allen Webster (2-2, 2.54) starts for Pawtucket, while righty Joel De La Cruz (1-1, 2.00) is expected to start for the RailRiders.
