The Abington Dirt Devils travel baseball team completed a sweep of two local tournaments.
The Dirt Devils played April 12-13 in the 1st annual Joe Rinkunas Memorial Tournament, at the Connell Park Little League Complex. The Dirt Devils went 4-0 and piled up 42 runs.
In the championship game against the Northeast Pride from Hawley, the Dirt Devils came back from a 9-4 deficit, and scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the game.
The Dirt Devils went 4-0 at the Battle of the Lake Tournament in Wallenpaupack on May 3-4. The team scored 26 runs, and only two runs were scored against them during their championship run.
“We started this team in 2013, as just a fun thing to do with friends and provide the boys with a few extra games,” Manager and Clarks Green resident Ryan Mitvalsky said. “They boys have really become excellent ball players, and love the game.”
The team is scheduled for eight more tournaments this fall which include games in Hershey Park, Diamond Nation (New Jersey), Baseball Heaven (New York), Sports on the Beach (Delaware), and they finish off the year at The Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, Maryland.
“Both the parents and kids have really enjoyed the experience,” Mitvalsky said. “You can truly see the beginning of friendships which will last a lifetime for these boys. They work hard to get where they are at, and they love playing the game.”
The team is comprised of boys, all age 10, from Abington Heights and North Pocono. For more information, or to follow the team, look them up on Facebook, Abington Dirt Devils, or email Abington.DirtDevils@yahoo.com.
