WILKES-BARRE — Alicia Johnson, editor of The Abington Journal, has been named sports editor of The Times Leader Media Group.

Johnson replaces John Medeiros, who had been sports editor since 2011.

“I’m incredibly excited and appreciative of this opportunity,” Johnson said. “Sports has been a major part of my life, and I look forward to bringing that excitement to the sports department.”

Prior to editing the Journal, Johnson was managing editor of 33 Universal in New York City, where she led a digital-only news team. She also was a sports reporter and editor at The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y., where she — in addition to covering games — maintained two blogs and shot and edited video. Before that, she was a sports reporter at The Sentinel in Carlisle.

“Alicia is an energetic journalist with significant experience in sports and digital journalism,” said George Spohr, executive editor of The Times Leader Media Group, which includes The Times Leader and The Abington Journal. “She’s the best person to lead our award-winning sports team.”

Johnson will remain editor of the Journal during a brief transition period.
