ARCHBALD — The Dallas bats stood no chance against the Valley View middle infield that served as a suction cup.

All four times the Mountaineers put runners in scoring position in the District 2 Class 3A softball quarterfinal, either Valley View shortstop Blayse Cholish or second baseman Kelly Mecca made an acrobatic play in the field to squelch any run production.

Valley View advanced to the semifinals Wednesday with a 3-0 shutout victory over Dallas. The Cougars will host Tunkhannock on Monday.

“We had our opportunities,” Dallas coach Joyce Tinner said. “But they’re a really good, fundamentally sound team. They kept doing what they had to.”

The Cougars’ Griffin Jones blasted a warning track double that brought in two runs in the first inning. Jones’ two-bagger proved to be the eventual game-winning run with seven Dallas runners left on base.

Dallas left two on in the top of the first inning after a Maddie Perez single and Sydney Kern walk. Cholish lunged for a pop fly for the second out before Valley View starter Morgan Caselli finished the inning on a comebacker.

The Mountaineers’ best chance came following a one-out Taylor Kelley triple to center field in the third. Perez lasered a ball to the right side where Mecca made a brilliant back-ended catch into right field for the second out. Katy Comitz grounded out to end the inning.

“It’s hard because you get runners in scoring position and we have to capitalize on that,” Tinner said. “We knew it was going to be a tight game, and that it would come down to one or two runs. Hand it to them — they made some great defensive plays when they had to.”

Mecca made two more stops to end chances in the fifth and seventh innings. With two runners on, she made a quick move on a Kelly Snyder ground ball to force a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Kern took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in three innings. Maddie Kelly worked nicely in relief. She allowed one hit in three scoreless innings.

Dallas’ left side of the infield countered the Cougars in defensive style points. Third baseman Kylee Saba and shortstop Kelley made 10 of the final 11 put-outs — many diving or running catches — for the Mountaineers.

“(Kelley) is probably one of the hardest-working kids I have,” Tinner said. “She’ll take ball after ball. She took a ball of her face one day at practice and the next she was out there for a game.”

Tunkhannock 3, North Pocono 2

The Tigers plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win in walk-off fashion over the Trojans in a D2-3A quarterfinal. Taylor Hegedty led off the inning with a double, then pinch runner Sarah Traver scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2.

Karlie Bulfords hit a sacrifice fly to knock in the winning run for Tunkhannock.

Berwick 1, Honesdale 0

Moriah Lynn tossed a six-hit shutout in the win for the Bulldogs. Sara Berlin and Abbey Remley had the only two hits in the D2-3A quartefinal game.

Megan Benson and Stacey Hart each had a double for Honesdale.

Wyoming Area 2, Abington Heights 1

Nicole Cumbo gave up three hits and one run in her complete game victory as the Warriors hung on over Abington Heights in a D2-3A quarterfinal game. Nicole Turner also went 2-for-3.

Dominque Emmett slammed a home run for Abington Heights.
