EDWARDSVILLE — If only softball was as easy as Hazleton Area’s Samantha Varela made it look in the seventh inning Tuesday.

Told to hit a home run, Varela did. Then Maria Trivelpiece later sliced a game-winning single to left as the Cougars rallied to defeat Williamsport 4-3 in the District 2/4 Class 4A championship game at Wilkes University.

“My coach told us all to take a pitch,” Varela said. “And he didn’t give me the take sign. He just told me to hit a home run and I did it.”

She did so on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh, depositing the ball over the left field fence to tie the score 3-3. And one out later, Mikaela Browdy and Mackenzie Yori hit consecutive singles and moved to second and third on a groundout.

That brought Trivelpiece to the plate and the lefty dropped a single into left, giving Hazleton Area (15-2) its third consecutive D2-4A title. The Cougars will play the District 3 runner-up on Monday in the first round of states.

The game-winning hit was special on a personal level for Trivelpiece. Her father Vince is the Hazleton Area head coach, but has been suspended for most of the season for an unspecified reason. He is also banned from attending Hazleton Area games.

“It’s hard,” Trivelpiece said. “He’s been my coach since I could walk. He was the one who put a bat in my hands in the first place. Without him, we would not be here. He’s the one who does all the hard work to get us here. He prepared us for these kind of moments.”

Williamsport (12-9) took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Taylor Brooks. The Millionaires also had first-and-third with one out in the seventh and tried a double steal, something they had done successfully in the second. Hazleton Area catcher Hope Kinney dropped the throw home, but had the plate blocked and was able to fish out the ball from between her knees to make the tag.

Hazleton Area also breathed a sigh of relief in the fourth when Williamsport’s Kaliyah Moore hooked what would have been a two-run homer just foul.

“All I remember from that play is praying it would get a little bit on the side of the foul pole,” Trivelpiece said. “Luckily, it did. Then she popped out and that was such a huge out.”

The Cougars also had to rally after Williamsport took a 2-0 lead in the second. They got one run back in the third on Abby Sachse’s RBI and another in the fourth on Celine Podlesney’s RBI single.

“They wanted it. They’ve wanted this all year from day one,” Hazleton Area acting head coach Ted Treon said. “The first day of practice, this is what they strove for. We came up in the bottom of the seventh and I told Samantha Varela ‘I now give you permission to hit a home run.’ And she did on the first pitch.”

For awhile Tuesday, it looked like there would be no dramatics. Heavy rain pounded the field and there was serious thoughts of scrapping the game until today. The game started after a 97-minute rain delay.

“It was horrible because we were so excited to play,” Varela said. “We were hoping the rain stopped and thank God it did.”
