ALLENTOWN — Every jam seemed to resolve itself through six innings Thursday.

Then came the seventh inning and with it the end of Berwick’s softball season.

Lansdale Catholic rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh, finally breaking through for a 2-1 victory over Berwick in a PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal game at Patriots Park.

Winning pitcher Ashley Seal helped her own cause with a two-run double in the inning to send District 12 champion Lansdale Catholic (20-5) to the state semifinals for the first time in school history. The Crusaders will play D11 champ Bethlehem Catholic on Monday.

“We matched up with them very well,” Berwick coach Brian Bridge said. “It was one of those days where it was one bounce going one way or the other. When we got up one run I felt pretty good. I was hoping we could hold them off. We had the right part of their lineup coming up. They just got two base hits there back to back that hurt us.”

D2 champion Berwick ended it year at 16-5. The Dawgs had won seven in a row entering Thursday’s game, including four by one run. That trend looked like it had a possibility of continuing as Kylene Welsh doubled with one out and Sara Berlin followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead after six innings.

Prior to Berwick taking the lead, Lansdale Catholic kept finding ways not to score.

In the fifth, Kristin Szczepaniak tagged up from third on a flyball to Berwick right fielder Ashton Mensinger. Mensinger’s throw home was up the third base line a bit, but Szczepaniak had slowed down halfway to the plate. The hesitation allowed Berlin, the Berwick catcher, to make a catch-and-tag just as Szczepaniak reached her.

In the sixth, Alicia Kradzinski singled with two outs and Szczepaniak followed with a double. Kradzinski, though, slammed on the brakes after passing third and tried to head back to the bag. She was tagged out to end the inning.

“You can say I tried to give them the game,” Lansdale Catholic coach Paul Suder said, blaming his third-base coaching blunders as the main reason the Crusaders didn’t score sooner.

Still, Lansdale Catholic had one more chance after Berwick took its 1-0 advantage. The Crusaders made the most of it as Alyssa Messina was hit by a pitch to start the seventh. Abby Caruso pinch ran and moved to second on Greta Sheridan’s single. Both girls scored when Seal doubled to left-center and just out of the reach of center fielder Abi Favata.

After two quick outs and a single by Berwick’s Taylor Kern, Seal got a flyout to end the game and Berwick’s season.

Seal pitched like she has all season — not overpowering hitters but not allowing solid contact. Berwick had three of its six hits in the sixth inning. The Dawgs failed to get runners home from third twice and second once.

“We have a lot of good hitters and kept waiting to make it happen,” Bridge said. “She had a good twist on her ball and it was popping us up. We kept telling the kids to hit the top part of the ball, but she kept getting pop-ups and that’s what hurt us.”

Twelve of Berwick’s 21 outs were via a pop or flyout.

“I knew they could hit,” Seal said. “I came in knowing I had to throw strikes, hit corners, get my movement pitches going.”
