MOOSIC – It was almost fitting that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre celebrated the history of the Red Barons on Thursday night.

Many of the franchise’s most memorable moments have come while the organization was named the Red Barons.

The RailRiders tried to relive one of them on Thursday night at PNC Field going back nearly 14 years when the Barons overcame an eight-run deficit in 2000 to dramatically claim a win.

While the RailRiders did overcome an eight-run deficit on Thursday, they couldn’t hold off a red-hot hitting Norfolk squad in the ninth inning. The Tides, who scored eight runs in the first two innings, were scoreless until the ninth when they put up a five-spot to ruin the comeback effort by SWB with a 13-9 victory.

Clinging to a 9-8 lead in the ninth inning and switch-pitching Pat Venditte on the mound — and struggling with his command after pitching a scoreless eighth — Norfolk loaded the bases and tied the game at 9-9 before Venditte got an out. He couldn’t get anyone else out allowing three more hits before Russ Canzler had to come in to get the final two outs of the ninth, which he did without giving up any hits.

The RailRiders started to overcome the 8-0 hole in the third when Zoilo Almonte (3 for 5) clubbed a three-run home run. In the next inning, SWB scored two more on RBI-singles by Jose Pirela (3 for 4) and Corban Joseph to cut Norfolk’s lead to 8-6. The RailRiders, who led for most of the game, weren’t done yet as they plated four in the fifth. Canzler (2 for 5), who has now hit safely in 10 straight games, doubled in a run and Antoan Richardson plated two with a single highlighting a four-run fifth giving the RailRiders a 9-8 lead.

They held the lead until the ninth as Francisco Rondon and Preston Claiborne each tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief of Shane Greene, who lasted just three innings.

The right-handed Greene allowed the first eight runs, but it wasn’t because of control problems as he threw 51 of his 81 pitches for strikes. He was hurt by possibly throwing too many strikes to the team that leads the International League in hits. The Tides banged out 10 hits off Greene — and 19 in the game — while scoring eight runs in the first two innings with the big blow being a three-run blast by Buck Britton in the top of the first. Steve Clevenger brought in two runs in the second with a double.

Notes: In 2000, the Red Barons trailed Buffalo by eight runs in the first inning before coming all the way back to win when Jimmy Rollins belted a grand slam and a game-winning sacrifice fly to beat the Bisons, 10-9. … The RailRiders scored five or more runs for the 11th straight game, which is something that has never been done in the time the franchise has been affiliated by the Yankees. The longest was five games, which occurred several times.
