STATE COLLEGE — One bad inning proved to be too much for the Bethlehem Catholic softball team to overcome on Friday in the PIAA Class 3A softball championship game at Penn State’s Nittany Lion Park.
Springfield-Delco bunched three hits and took advantage of a Golden Hawks error to score three times in the third inning and then rode the shutuout pitching of Coutney Scarpato to win 3-0.
Sophomore Elyse Cuttic pitched well for Becahi (20-7) but the Golden Hawks simply couldn’t get anything going offensively against the Cougars’ junior hurler.
Emily Brandstetter had two of the team’s five hits, but mostly Becahi pounded the ball into the ground against Scarpato, who didn’t have a strikeout or a walk.
In the top of the third, Scarpato got the winning rally started with an infield single. Taylor Winkleman followed with a single to center. Tori DiPietro followed with a grounder to third that was thrown away for the first run.
Lauren Scarpato then made it 3-0 with a two-run double to left-center.
Cuttic got out of the inning without further damage and held Springfield-Delco scoreless on one hit the rest of the way to give her team a chance.
But Becahi had two runners on base in just one inning and struggled to put things together against the fast-working Scarpato.
