RICE TWP. — In what might have been his last game of organized baseball, Jimmy Strickland had himself some fun.

The recent Holy Redeemer grad made the most of his final two at-bats this year and was named MVP of the 2014 WVC Senior All-Star Baseball Game at Mountain Post Legion.

Strickland went 2 for 2 with two RBI in helping his East squad slug past the West all-stars 14-2 on Tuesday.

One of the highlights was a Strickland shot to the fence that went for a stand-up triple.

“That’s my first one (this season),” Strickland said with a laugh.

Strickland was a contributor on Redeemer’s 2012 district championship squad, but it’s football, not baseball in his future. The holder of the District 2 record for single-game passing yards, Strickland will be playing for East Stroudsburg in the fall.

Tuesday’s all-star game allowed Strickland and 31 other area seniors to take the diamond as high-schoolers one final time.

“It was a blast,” Strickland said. “This might be the last time I ever play. So when I found out I was invited to play this game, I said, ‘Absolutely.’”

That was the idea for Hanover Area coach Mike Zapotoski and the rest of the WVC baseball coaches when they got together to bring the senior game back after a one-year hiatus.

Summer vacations and summer baseball prevented a handful of selected seniors from playing — the West squad ended up having a smaller roster for the game because of some absences — but 19 still suited up for the East with 13 playing for the West.

Strickland and Hanover Area teammates Mike Sulcoski (double, two RBI) and Mike Blazaskie (double) all had two hits to lead the East, which jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings.

Crestwood’s Anthony Caladie (double, two RBI) and Brian Markowski (two RBI) also came through, playing on their varsity home field. MMI Prep’s Charlie Karchner also drove in two runs for the East.

Hazleton Area’s Tony Hernandez started for the East and struck out five in two innings of work as six players took the mound.

“The baseball in this area is outstanding, and just to be able to showcase our seniors and give them a little sendoff is great,” said Hazleton Area coach Gino Cara, who managed the East team along with Pittston Area coach Paul Zaffuto. “It was a fun day.”

The West squad had some chances to chip away at that big early deficit but couldn’t capitalize. West loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second before Hernandez came through with back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

West broke through in the fourth on an RBI single by Dallas’ Justin Brojakowski following by an RBI grounder off the bat of Lake-Lehman’s Cody Paraschak.

Wyoming Area’s Kyle Charney had two hits to lead the West on the day.

“Just to be able to get this going is great. Hopefully we can keep it going,” Cara said. “It’s really worthwhile to do, and it’s fun. It worked out well.”
