NANTICOKE — Nanticoke’s late-night rally in the sixth inning fell just short as Dunmore held on for a 7-6 victory Sunday in a Section 5 Little League Major Baseball elimination game.
Dunmore will play Archbald at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Nanticoke in the elimination bracket final. The winner plays unbeaten Back Mountain American at 7 p.m. Tuesday, also at Nanticoke.
The game was delayed over two hours because of heavy rain and resumed at 10:45 p.m. with Dunmore leading 3-2 in the fourth inning. The final out was recorded at 11:33 p.m.
Dunmore used a two-run double by Jake McNeff to take a 7-5 lead into the top of the sixth.
Nanticoke’s Colby Butczynski opened the sixth with an infield single. Jared Piontkowski then hit a low liner to right and a bad hop allowed Butczynski to score from first to move Nanticoke within 7-6. After an out, Jeremy Grudzinski hit an infield single to short, but Piontkowski couldn’t move up from second base.
Both runners managed to get to second and third on a wild-pitch third strike before the game ended with a flyout to center field.
Nanticoke scored three times in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Jake Krupinski tied the score 3-3 with an RBI single. Dylan Szychowski followed with a single, and he and Krupinski scored when Austin Norton doubled off the center-field fence.
Dunmore, though, came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. The first two scored when Ross Conrad looped a single just inside the right-field foul line. McNeff later hit a two-out double for a 7-5 lead.
