UNION TWP. — The Northwest Area School Board hired a new varsity boys’ basketball coach on Wednesday night.

The board voted unanimously to appoint Justin Babcock, former head coach at Tunkhannock Area, as coach, succeeding Eric Miner whose resignation was also accepted Wednesday.

Miner had been appointed at the April board meeting, but because of what school director Peter Lanza called “personal reasons” Miner chose to resign.

Besides Tunkhannock, Babcock has also been an assistant basketball coach at Pittston Area.

In addition, after several people spoke out on her behalf, the board chose to retain Amy Kachinko as girls’ varsity basketball coach.

The vote on Kachinko was also unanimous.
