The Penguins brought back another Stanley Cup winner from their early 1990s heyday.

Mark Recchi was hired as player development coach, the team announced Friday. Recchi, who had 385 points in 389 games over three stints with the Penguins, fills a position that was vacated when Bill Guerin was promoted to assistant general manager last month.

Recchi will be responsible for working with and assisting in the development of prospects and players throughout the Penguins’ organization in the minor leagues as well as in junior and college hockey.

A three-time Stanley Cup winner — including in 1991 as now-owner Mario Lemieux’s right wing — Recchi ranks fourth all time in NHL games played (1,652), 12th in points (1,533) and 19th in goals (577).

Recchi was part of a five-player trade in early 1992 with the Philadelphia Flyers that netted the Penguins, among others, Rick Tocchet. Tocchet won the ‘92 Cup with the Penguins and was hired as an assistant coach for the team last month.

Recchi, 46, retired after winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 with the Boston Bruins. He has been living in Pittsburgh and has spent the past two years involved with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite youth hockey program. During that period, he was also a senior advisor for the Dallas Stars.
