Ross Danzig, an Abington Heights High School graduate, and the rest of his University of Scranton men’s basketball teammates are drawing national attention.
In the 2013-14 Sporting News College Basketball Preview, Danzig has been named preseason honorable mention All-American while the Royals have been listed as a possible breakthrough as a top 10 team.
In his first two seasons, Danzig has started 57 consecutive games and is averaging 14.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 steals each time out. In addition, he is shooting 47.7 percent from the field, 37.0 percent from the 3-point arc, and 75.4 percent from the free throw line for his career. He was named the Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year in 2012 and was a first-team all-conference selection last winter.
Ross’s father, veteran Royals head coach Carl Danzig, has led Scranton to four Landmark Conference championships (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012) in the league’s six-year history and his resume also includes six NCAA tournament appearances (2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012), including an Elite Eight berth (2012) and 15th-place ranking by D3hoops.com in 2012.
The Royals, coming off a 19-7 record last year—their ninth straight winning season, will open the 2013-14 season by hosting Immaculate University on Friday, Nov. 15, in the first round of the Radisson Invitational at the Long Center beginning at 7:30 p.m.
