Sarah Catharine Parker Killian and Lieutenant John Wehrum Robert Gilligan, U.S.N., were united in marriage on Sept. 14, 2013, at Shavertown United Methodist Church, Shavertown. The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Sara Baron, friend of the couple.
The bride is a daughter of Attorney Stephen B. and Estella Parker Killian, Shavertown. She is the granddaughter of Harriet J. Parker and the late C. King Parker, Shavertown, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Steve F. Killian, West Nanticoke.
The groom is the son of Martin and Mary Barbara Gilligan, Dallas. He is the grandson of John and Dolores Wehrum, Dunmore, and the late Attorney Harry P. and Marian O’Neill. He is the great-grandson of the late Congressman Harry P. O’Neill.
The bride was given in marriage by her father. She chose her sister, Elizabeth J. Killian, as her maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Kelly Anunkst, Jamie Jordan, Cece Manning, Kristen Morrison, Elise Persico and Amanda Smith, friends of the bride, and Katie and Molly Gilligan, sisters of the groom.
The groom chose Adam Morgan as his best man. Groomsmen were Mathew Bridwell, Christopher Eckman, Brian Haughwout, Matthew Katyl, Gregg Singer, Sean Smith and Christopher Young. Ushers, who also served as swordsmen, were LT Zachary Buzzatto, LT Paul Galatro, LT Christopher Hornung, LT John Russell and LT Nicolaas Veerhoeven.
Scriptural readings were given by Estella Parker Killian, mother of the bride, and Mary Barbara Gilligan, mother of the groom. Organist was John Vaida, friend of the bride.
The couple exited the church through a traditional Navy sword arch. A cocktail reception was held at the Westmoreland Club, where guests danced to music by The New York Times Band. Marty Gilligan, father of the groom, played guitar and sang “Wonderful Tonight” for the couple’s first dance as husband and wife.
The bride was honored with a display shower given by the bridesmaids and held at the home of Attorney and Mrs. Joseph Persico, Shavertown. A variety shower was given by the grandmothers of the bride and held at Leggio’s, Dallas. Dr. Cynthia Mailloux, friend of the bride, hosted a luncheon for the bridal party. A bachelor party was hosted by friends of the groom. A rehearsal party hosted by the groom’s parents was held at Irem Country Club.
The bride is a graduate of Wyoming Valley Montessori School, Wyoming Seminary Class of 2003 and Allegheny College, magna cum laude. She holds a Master of Science degree in psychology from Marywood University.
The groom is a 2003 graduate of Dallas High School and a 2007 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with distinction. He is stationed at the Naval submarine base New London in Groton, Connecticut, where he is an instructor at the Naval Submarine School.
The couple honeymooned in Jamaica. They reside in Mystic, Connecticut.
