SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A trio of RailRiders newcomers, including a familiar face, helped skipper Dave Miley have a happy 52nd birthday on Thursday.

Hazleton native Russ Canzler went 2 f0r 4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored, Scott Sizemore went 3 for 3 and Bruce Billings had a stellar pitching debut for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the RailRiders defeated Syracuse, 4-1 on Thursday at NBT Bank Stadium.

It was the franchise’s first win on Opening Day since 2010 and its first road Opening Day win since a victory at Lehigh Valley to begin the 2009 campaign.

Billings went five innings and allowed just one run on seven hits in his first outing for the RailRiders after pitching for Triple-A Sacramento last season.

The RailRiders didn’t waste any time getting things started as they scored a run in the top of the first as back-to-back singles by Jose Pirela and Scott Sizemore to start the game. Pirela came around to score when Zoilo Almonte grounded into a double play to put SWB ahead 1-0.

Leading off the top of the fourth, Canzler doubled, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a triple by Ramon Flores as the RailRiders extended their lead to 2-0.

Meanwhile, Billings was doing just what he needed to to get by. He allowed hits in the first three innings, but got a pickoff, and caught stealing in the first two innings and pitched around a leadoff double in the third before retiring the side in order in the fourth.

Canzler came through with another double in the top of the fifth, scoring Sizemore to extend SWB’s lead to 4-0. But the Chiefs scored one and threatened for more in the bottom of the frame. Eury Perez singled to score former SWB Yankee Brandon Laird and put runners on first and third with no outs. Will Rhymes then flied out and when Jhonatan Solano tried to score from third, he was gunned down at the plate by Flores in right field. Billings induced a grounder to end the inning and his outing.

Preston Claiborne relieved Billings, allowing a one-out single in the sixth. And that’s all the Chiefs got the rest of the day as RailRider relievers retired the last 11 batters.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pounded out 10 hits, four of which went for extra-bases. Game 2 of the series is set for today at 5 p.m. with right-hander Chase Whitley (3-2, 3.06 in 2013) going for the RailRiders against Chiefs’ righty Taylor Hill (1-0, 4.22 in 2013).
