ROCHESTER, N.Y. — In 2013, one of the RailRiders’ strengths was holding leads.

For two games in a row now, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre couldn’t hold two different leads as Rochester completed the three-game sweep of the RailRiders on Wednesday with a 7-6 win at Frontier Field. This came after they lost the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader giving up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to lose by one run.

After beginning the season on the road for a week, the RailRiders return home tonight for their home opener at 7:05 against Syracuse.

The RailRiders opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Russ Canzler, but the Red Wings answered with two in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Deibinson Romero and a sac fly from Brad Nelson.

After tying the score at 2-2 on a run-scoring ground out by John Ryan Murphy (2 for 5) in the top of the third, SWB took a 4-2 lead the next inning as Antoan Richardson, who played for Rochester last season, singled in a run. The fourth run scored when Scott Sizemore (2 for 3) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

But RailRiders pitchers couldn’t keep the Red Wings off the board. Rochester scored in three consecutive innings, including three runs off reliever David Herndon (0-1) to regain the lead at 5-4 entering the sixth inning.

Jim Miller replaced Herndon in the sixth and didn’t fare much better as Rochester plated to more runs on a pair of RBI hits to extend its lead to 7-4. After the shaky sixth inning, Miller got through the seventh without allowing anymore damage.

SWB got two back in the top of the eighth as Sizemore got an RBI on a sac fly and Murphy walloped a double to score Jose Pirela (2 for 5) and pull the team within one at 7-6; Murphy was stranded at second.

Yoshinori Tateyama tossed a perfect eighth for the RailRiders, giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre another opportunity in the top of the ninth.

The RailRiders had plenty of opportunities in the game pounding 13 hits and drawing four walks, but they left 11 runners on base. In 20 at-bats with runners in scoring position, they had just six hits.

Adonis Garcia (2 for 4) laced a one-out single in the top of the ninth, but Ramon Flores and Zelous Wheeler (2 for 4) each struck out to end the game.

RailRiders starter Chase Whitley only lasted three innings allowing two runs on six hits and took a no-decision. He was chased by the Rochester offense which was productive all night. The Red Wings notched 15 hits, including five doubles. They left 10 runners on base, but went 5 for 15 with runners in scoring position, proving to be the difference.
