DURHAM, N.C. — It’s a tough day when a walk is your highlight.

Russ Canzler’s leadoff walk in the second inning was the only blemish on a combined no-hitter from Mike Montgomery and Brad Boxberger as Durham delighted a sellout crowd with a 5-0 victory over the RailRiders on Saturday in the opener of a four-game set.

Montgomery moved to 3-0 on the season, striking out nine in a career-best 8 1/3 innings. He threw 106 pitches, 69 of them for strikes.

Boxberger got a ground out and strike out to end the game. Every RailRider in the lineup except Ramon Flores and Austin Romine fanned at least once. Only one ball off a RailRiders bat left the infield in the final six innings.

Durham (16-8) jumped on the board in the first inning as Vince Belnome singled before Wilson Betemit and Jerry Sands worked back-to-back walks from Caleb Cotham. Cole Figueroa then reached on a slow roller that scored Belnome, while the throw to first was errant, allowing Betemit to score from second base for a 2-0 lead.

Belnome crushed a solo shot over the center field wall leading off the third for a 3-0 advantage.

The Bulls added the contest’s final runs in the fifth frame, as Belnome, Sands and Figueroa all tallied a double in the frame to score a pair. Belnome and Figueroa each finished 3-for-4, with Belnome scoring three times.

Right-hander Caleb Cotham (0-2) took the loss for the RailRiders (10-11), allowing three runs — two earned — on six hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked two.

In all, RailRiders pitchers fanned 10 Bulls, with Diego Moreno posting four strikeouts in two innings of work and Robert Coello adding a K in two scoreless innings on the hill.

The teams continue their four-game set Sunday when RHP Brian Gordon (1-1, 2.57) takes the mound for the RailRiders against RHP Merrill Kelly (4-0, 1.50) of the Bulls. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
