MOOSIC – Doug Bernier played three seasons with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

In the 245 games with the franchise, the utility infielder always seemed to do the little things to help the club.

Now playing for Rochester, Bernier piled up three hits, two RBI, scored a run and stole a base to lead the Red Wings to a 6-2 win on Sunday at PNC Field.

Rochester, playing without big leaguers Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia for the first time this series, remained the hottest team in the International League, winning 10 of their last 12 games. It was also Rochester’s ninth win in the last 10 games against the RailRiders dating back to last season.

After allowing a pair of RailRider runs in the first two innings – one scoring on an error in the bottom of the first and the second when Francisco Arcia singled in Russ Canzler in the second to give SWB a 2-0 lead – Rochester starter Kris Johnson settled down.

The lefty retired the next 18 batters until Jose Pirela walked with one out in the bottom of the eighth. He faced the minimum through the final 20 batters he faced, however, as Pirela was erased on a double-play groundout. During the stretch of the last 20 batters Johnson faced, only three balls were hit to the outfield as Johnson tied a career-high with eight innings pitched. Arcia’s hit was the last of the game for SWB as Johnson and A.J. Achter faced the minimum over the last 7 2/3.

“It was weird watching him the first couple innings because he didn’t seem like himself,” said Canzler, who played with Johnson in Indianapolis last season. “We had our opportunities. You get two runs the first two innings you feeling pretty good and have the momentum, but we just didn’t take advantage of it and just kinda stopped right there.”

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre also had defensive issues. The team had been playing its best defense of the season, having three straight errorless games and committing just one miscue in its previous six games.

The RailRiders, who have the worst fielding percentage in the International League, couldn’t continue the clean baseball on Sunday as they made two miscues, helping the Red Wings score two runs. Both of those errors came in the fifth inning.

Bernier tied the game at 2-2 with a run-scoring single, and Pedro Florimon hit a sac fly to give Rochester the lead at 3-2 in the fifth. SWB second baseman Pirela and shortstop Dean Anna then each had throwing errors. Anna’s allowed one more run to score and helped Rochester take a 4-2 lead.

Joel De La Cruz was in control early on for the RailRiders having a clean sheet in the first two innings before allowing a pair of singles and a run in the third.

The right-handed De La Cruz only gave up three earned runs, but his ERA rose from 1.90 to 2.51. In all five of his Triple-A starts, he’s lasted at least five innings, and the three earned runs he gave up Sunday was the most in those outings.

“He’s been great. He’s really fun to play behind,” Canzler said about De La Cruz. “He’s working fast, throwing strikes and his two-seamer … it almost looks like a lefty slider coming out of his hand. He’s done a really good job.”
