The red-hot Jose Pirela flied out with runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth inning as the RailRiders fell a run short of completing a comeback, and lost to Toledo, 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field.


RailRiders at the plate: Zelous Wheeler and Carmen Angelini each finished with three hits for the squad, with Wheeler hitting his sixth home run of the season. Russ Canzler finished 0 for 3 and was pinch-hit for in the ninth as his 10-game hitting streak closed.


RailRiders on the mound: It was decent start for Zach Nuding as he tossed four innings, and in the fourth he allowed all three runs and was pulled after throwing 86 pitches. Jairo Heredia was the first in from the bullpen and pitched two innings while allowing two runs, but it could’ve been worse as he gave up four hits and walked four. Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte worked a scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth.


Riding the Rails: Reliever Shawn Kelly threw 19 pitches in a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Trenton. He’s expected to throw again today for the RailRiders. Kelly has been out with a strained lumbar spine since May 7. …Francisco Cervelli was received by the RailRiders to continue his rehab assignment on Sunday. …Alfredo Aceves, designated for assignment by New York last week, officially cleared waivers and was outrighted to SWB on Sunday.
