It didn’t take long for former RailRiders infielder Russ Canzler to find a new home, close to his hometown.

Less than a week after being released by the RailRiders, Canzler signed with the Phillies on Wednesday and started for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday night.

The Hazleton native hit cleanup as the IronPigs designated hitter during Thursday’s game against Rochester in which LV won 1-0. Canzler went 1 for 3 with a walk in the victory.

In 51 games prior to his release, Canzler hit .263 for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with two home runs, two triples and 24 RBI. The 2011 International League Most Valuable Player is now with his eighth different organization since 2010.

The RailRiders play at Lehigh Valley on Saturday and Sunday, while Canzler will return to PNC Field with the IronPigs on Monday and Tuesday.

RailRiders claim opener

SYRACUSE, NY — Taylor Dugas and Zelous Wheeler comined to drive in five runs Thursday as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders carved out a 7-4 victory over Syracuse in the first game of a double-header.

The second game was still in progress at press time.

Taylor Dugas had the big blow of the night, smashing a bases-clearing three-run double to give the RailRiders a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Robert Refsnyder plated two more RailRiders runs with a two-run single in the third to make it a 5-0 ball game.

After Syracuse pulled within 5-4, Wheeler whipped up a two-run double in the top of the seventh to set the final score.

All of Syracuse’s four runs came in the fifth and sixth innings with the Chiefs scoring two in each. Emmanuel Burris, Jeff Kobernus, Brandon Laird and Will Rhymes all had an RBI for the Chiefs. Laird had the only extra-base hit for Syracuse with a double

Alfredo Aceves pitched 4.1 innings and gave up five hits and two runs in the outing. Danny Burawa (3-0) picked up the win in relief. Josh Roenicke (3-4) took the loss for the Chiefs.

At the time of press, the RailRiders were leading 3-0 in the 4th inning in game two of the twin-bill. International League (IL) double-headers are seven-inning games.
