MOOSIC — While managing the Phillies, Charlie Manuel always liked hot weather and used the term “hittin’ weather” when referring to the outside temperature.

Manuel, who was present at PNC Field on a hot Monday night as part of the Lehigh Valley staff, probably liked what he saw from the IronPigs and RailRiders.

The teams combined for 16 runs and 24 hits, including 11 extra-base hits during Monday’s 9-7 IronPigs’ victory.

In addition to the former Philadelphia skipper being donned in IronPigs gear at the ballpark, an old friend of the RailRiders was also on hand and played a big part of the game.

Former RailRiders and Hazleton native Russ Canzler went 2 for 5 in his return to his old stomping grounds, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.

Canzler, who was cut by the RailRiders on June 20, has hit four lifetime home runs at PNC Field as a pro and three of them have come as visitors despite playing 25 games in Moosic as part of the home team this season opposed to just 13 at the stadium as a visitor. As part of the visiting team, he’s hit one each with Durham (2011), Norfolk (2013) and now Lehigh Valley.

“I felt like I had a good home there with the Yankees and they thought otherwise so you just have to respect that and be grateful for the opportunity they gave me and be welcome to a new opportunity with the Phillies,” Canzler said.

Canzler’s blast, which was a lined blast over the fence in left field, put the IronPigs ahead 8-5 in the seventh inning. The RailRiders attempted to overcome the deficit as Zelous Wheeler hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning trimming the lead to 8-7, but Lehigh Valley added an insurance run in the top of the eighth to secure the victory.

The IronPigs got off to a good start against SWB starter Bruce Billings in the top of the first for a pair of runs when Steve Susdorf (3 for 5) – who is hitting .450 (18 for 40) in 10 games against the RailRiders this season – doubled in a run, stole third then scored on a single by Jim Murphy.

After going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, the RailRiders got to a wild Brad Lincoln in the second inning. Lincoln got behind four of the seven batters in the inning and the RailRiders took advantage. The big blow of the frame came from Scott Sizemore, who belted his fourth triple of the season to plate a pair of runs and tied the game at 2-2. He then scored on a single by Taylor Dugas as SWB took a 3-2 lead.

Lehigh Valley didn’t waste time in tying it up the next half inning as Canzler scored the tying run when he hit an infield single then scored on a triple by Cameron Perkins.

A pair of solo homers in the top of the fifth – a bomb by Leandro Castro onto the bridge in left field and a blast to center by Jim Murphy – put the IronPigs back in front, 5-3.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre came back to tie the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Sizemore added his second triple of the game and sixth of the season with one out then scored on a double by Dugas trimming Lehigh Valley’s lead to 5-4. Dugas (2 for 4, 2 RBI) came home on a single by Jose Pirela to tie the game at 5-5. Sizemore’s triple brings him within one of the International League lead.

Billings, who fell to 4-5, was charged with seven runs and 12 hits in 6-plus innings of work.
