Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost for the eighth time in 12 games to the IronPigs this season, dropping a 3-2 decision to Lehigh Valley on Tuesday night at PNC Field.


With the loss, the RailRiders fall to 40-44 this season and were jumped in the standings by the IronPigs for fifth place in the six-team I.L. North Division.


RailRiders at the plate: Zoilo Almonte hit a two-run homer, his 12th this season, but the first while the switch-hitter was batting right-handed. Jose Pirela went 2 for 5 with a pair of singles, while Kyle Roller also had two hits with a double and single.


RailRiders on the mound: Alfredo Aceves recovered from a rough first inning when he gave up a pair of runs, but he was still hit with the loss allowing three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to fall to 0-1 this season. After Robert Coello pitched a scoreless frame, Pat Venditte tossed the rest of the game going 2 2/3 innings, fanning five on the night.


Riding the Rails: RailRiders right-hander Jim Miller had his contract purchased by New York, while righty Jose Ramirez was optioned from New York to Triple-A.


Pirela lauded: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre infielder/outfielder Jose Pirela was named the International League Player of the Month for June on Tuesday. He led the league with 40 hits in the month going 40 for 119 with four homers, four doubles, two triples, 18 RBI, 21 runs scored, 10 walks and five stolen bases.


The Quest for the IronRail: The IronPigs hold the advantage in the season series 8-4 as the teams are battling for the IronRail Trophy, which goes to the team that wins the most games between each other this season. The RailRiders currently have the trophy after coming from behind to win it last year.


If SWB is going to claim it again this season, it will have to win the five remaining games in the season series. The next time the rivalry is renewed is Aug. 29 in Allentown.
