MOOSIC — It’s only early June, but the RailRiders have already had many new faces on the roster for the first time that have aspirations of eventually making it to Yankee Stadium.

On Tuesday night at PNC Field, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre picked up two more first-timers to don the RailRiders uniform, but this pair was expected to start the season in New York before injuries occurred.

Left-hander Jose De Paula and infielder Brendan Ryan each contributed to help the RailRiders top Pawtucket 3-2.

With the win, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ends its three-game losing streak and will look to win its first series at home since beating Indianapolis two out of three on May 10. The RailRiders and PawSox meet in the rubber game of the three-game series this afternoon at 12:05.

De Paula got the start and dazzled for most of the five-plus innings he worked as he picked up the win, allowing just five baserunners (four hits, one walk) and no runs.

De Paula, who was signed as a Major League free agent by the Yankees in November, reported shoulder soreness while in spring training with New York and made his first official start this season. He threw 79 pitches, 53 of them strikes, and retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced. That hit was a single by Jackie Bradley Jr., the last batter De Paula faced.

“I felt good. I tried the best I can do and working the zone,” De Paula said. “I was in extended (spring training) starting for a little bit. I got sore and now I’m starting and ready to go.”

Ryan, who has been plagued by multiple leg injuries all season, finally made his way to the RailRiders after playing just one official game for Class-A Tampa. The Major League veteran reached base two times in four plate appearances with a single and a walk.

Able to play all over the infield, Ryan made a few stellar plays at third base. He could play second base in today’s game before taking a day off on Thursday and joining Trenton on Friday.

“I feel healthy, so I guess that’s the most important thing, so I’m just trying to develop rhythm and timing like we all are when we’re getting back,” Ryan said. “Hopefully it just keeps getting better and better.

“It felt good to get a look at a different position and I want to be an option for (Yankees manager Joe Girardi).”

The RailRiders made Pawtucket starter Keith Couch uncomfortable in the fifth inning, tagging the righty for three runs as eight batters stepped to the plate.

The big hit of the inning was a two-run bomb by Tyler Austin that was way out to left-center field, hitting the bridge under the scoreboard on a bounce. The shot gave the RailRiders a 2-0 lead. Two batters later after Cole Figueroa doubled, Nick Noonan singled him in for a 3-0 lead.

“This is a big one for us tonight,” said Austin, who bashed his fourth homer of the season and third in his last 14 games. “We had great pitching. That inning was huge to get a few runs on the board and set the tone for the rest of the game.”

The bullpen got out of a few near-devastating jams late in the game. In the sixth, after Bradley Jr.’s hit, Diego Moreno allowed consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs before getting a flyball to shallow center and a double play groundout to end the inning.

“Diego’s got great stuff when he’s on the mound. I think everyone loves behind him, you know what you’re gonna get from him when he’s out there,” Austin said. “It was big to come out of that inning with no runs put up.”

Pawtucket added two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer from Bryce Brentz off Tyler Webb before Jose Ramirez had a perfect ninth for his seventh save.
