MOOSIC — It was fitting that the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre franchise celebrated What If Night on Friday at PNC Field giving fans the opportunity to see what everything would be like if the team never changed names from Yankees to RailRiders because the last time the franchise was in first place by more than one game was in 2012 when the team was named the Yankees.

During the six-year run when the franchise held the Yankees moniker, it was the most successful run in SWB history claiming the 2008 Governors’ Cup title with plenty of drama along the way.

On Friday night, the RailRiders resembled those teams in many ways during a 13-3 win over Rochester as the game was called before the top of the ninth was finished. They set a new season-high for runs and hits (18) in a game. With the win, the RailRiders have won their fifth straight game, 10th out of their last 11 and extends their lead in the International League North Division to 3.5 games over second-place Rochester.

The RailRiders looked like a championship-caliber team with plenty of drama.

First-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre showed championship aspirations in the first inning on Friday as the first five batters all reached base and scored. Rob Refsnyder clubbed a three-run homer three batters into the game and Kyle Roller followed with a solo shot giving the RailRiders a fast 4-0 lead.

Then the drama began as Rochester starter Lester Oliveros whizzed a fastball into the earhole of Austin Romine flooring the catcher, who laid on the ground for several minutes. Before Oliveros got the ball back, he was ejected and the dugouts and bullpens emptied.

No punches were thrown in the incident, but Romine — who has been one of the hottest hitters in the lineup — had to leave the game and was replaced by Eddy Rodriguez, who pinch-ran then eventually scored on a single by Cole Figueroa giving the RailRiders a 5-0 lead.

After Rochester got a run back in the top of the second off Jose De Paula, that’s all the team would get off the left-hander until the sixth inning. De Paula (2-0) lasted 5 2/3 innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Although he did hit a batter, it wasn’t retaliation for Oliveros hitting Romine as he plunked Reynaldo Rodriguez in the sixth with a breaking ball.

The retaliation came in the seventh inning when Nick Rumbelow relieved De Paula and appeared to try to hit Argenis Diaz. A fastball from Rumbelow struck the dirt next to Diaz’ feet and he was ejected.

The RailRiders cooled off for a few innings too, but got piping hot again in the bottom of the fifth. SWB sent 11 batters to the plate scoring seven runs in the frame highlighted by run-scoring doubles from Jose Pirela and Ramon Flores as the RailRiders opened a 12-1 lead.
