The T.L. Express

Four RailRider relievers combined for an eight-hit shutout as SWB knocked off Charlotte 4-0 on Thursday night at PNC Field.

RailRiders at the plate: Melky Mesa hit a two-run homer in the first inning, while Adonis Garcia hit a solo shot. The fourth run of the game scored when Ronnier Mustelier doubled in Randy Ruiz. Mesa and Ruiz were the two players with multiple hits on the night.

RailRiders on the mound: It was a bullpen day as only relievers saw action with Chase Whitley leading off by pitching the first four innings of two-hit, no-run ball. Jim Miller, who picked up the win to improve to 3-5, relieved Whitley and pitched two scoreless frames with four punch-outs. Cesar Cabral took over in the seventh and allowed a pair of hits while getting two outs. Yoshinori Tateyama inherited Cabral’s baserunners and got the last out. He continued to finish off the shutout and picked up his first save of the season.

Riding the Rails: The RailRiders lost a pair of left-handers on Thursday when David Huff was called up to New York and Mike Zagurski – who blew the save and took the loss on Wednesday – was granted his release, exercising an opt-out clause in his minor league deal. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre did receive Dellin Betances from New York to take one of the roster spots. …With the win, the RailRiders now have 19 games remaining on the 2013 schedule with a 60-66 record. In order to not finish .500 or worse for the first time since becoming a Yankee affiliate in 2007, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will have to win 14 of its last 19. The last time the franchise was at the even mark or worse for the season was the 2005 Red Barons, who ended 69-75.
