Aug. 6 will mark the 35th anniversary of the discovery of the body of an unnamed infant in the now-closed West Side Landfill.

As many people know, the remains of the infant boy were never claimed, and he rests to this day beneath a grave marker in Courtdale that bears the simple name of “Baby Boy.” The memory of the infant has been kept alive by those who remember the crime, and through news reports and columns, many of which have been crafted by current Times Leader reporter Ed Lewis.

I wasn’t born until several years after the infant’s death, but since first reading of the crime in 2005, the unsolved case has often been in my thoughts. Going forward, I hope that anyone with information on the case will contact authorities. I’m not a police officer, lawyer or judge, but simply a citizen wishing for closure for this nameless child.

I can’t understand why anyone would discard of an innocent child in such heartless fashion, but I hope that the person(s) responsible for the case either comes forward or is identified through the investigative process. We will never know what this child would have done in life, but we can keep his memory alive in the hope that this story will someday conclude with peace, justice and dignity.
