“Breastfeeding and Work: Let’s Make it Work!” is the theme of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated worldwide from Aug. 1 through 7. Consider these three areas that can help employed mothers continue a breast-feeding relationship with their infant: time, space and support.

Mother and baby togetherness during maternity leave is an investment of time that can help a mom return to the workplace with breast-feeding well established.

When employers make available a private space, other than a restroom, where nursing mothers can express their milk they are helping breast-feeding succeed. A space as small as 4 feet-by-5 feet that is shielded from view can be effective for this purpose.

Support from co-workers and supervisors will help the breast-feeding employee to meet her infant-feeding goals. When co-workers express a positive attitude regarding breast-feeding they are normalizing this infant-feeding method.
