In Sunday’s article “Violence up, cops needed,” Hazleton’s police chief says, “The old community is afraid of the unknown.”

What a bunch of tripe! And, you don’t need “Spanish-speaking officers,” you need English-speaking citizens.

The “old community” is quite aware of their fears, and little of it is “unknown.” Stop feeding the old community that they should remember about the Irish, the Italians or any other culture that came here and built your “b” rated sanctuary city (spell that, berated little town).

I believe that everyone is a little bit tired of having it hinted to us that we should show some form of guilt or responsibility for not lowering our standards and our customary way of life in order to be accepting of others. It seems to be more obvious that we cannot send the immigration problem back to its points of origin. Nor can we expect 21st century immigration to be one of assimilation.

However, I do offer this suggestion: Perhaps Hazleton’s body politic could move to Baltimore, Camden, Detroit or South Boston, and when you return then perhaps you could use the experience and education that you gleaned to explain to the “old community” about fear and why they are, and should be, afraid.
