Reading Michael MacDowell’s commentary (“Topple Pennsylvania’s monopoly on selling liquor,” Aug. 23) is just scary.

It seems that we believe the only way to do business in this country is to destroy the middle class. He wants the clerks to work for minimum wage with no benefits so he can enjoy cheap liquor. Then when we take their jobs, we blame them for being fat, lazy and stupid.

America is great when we have a middle class. But we are changing into something I don’t recognize as we morph into a me-my-mine society.
