As Congress debates President Barack Obama’s plan to lift sanctions on Iranian oil exports, Americans should ask themselves, what about lifting the ban on oil exports for the United States?

For four decades, a ban has been in place preventing American companies from exporting American oil. This disco-era policy was created at a time when our leaders believed an energy scarcity would continue. A lot has changed since then, not the least of which is fact that the United States is now a leader on the international stage as an energy producer.

A bill, H.R. 702, would modernize our energy market to reflect current conditions. Our U.S. lawmakers should support this legislation so Americans can enjoy the economic growth, lower heating and gasoline prices, and increased jobs it will create.

The United States should not be contemplating lifting sanctions on countries like Iran while imposing economic sanctions on ourselves.
