As the Luzerne County Council considers candidates for Luzerne County manager, I feel compelled to write a letter in support of interim manager David Pedri.

I am currently employed by Luzerne County as the director of Veteran Affairs. I am also a resident and a taxpayer of Luzerne County.

Many comments I’ve read online and in the newspapers allege a “fix” is in to appoint Mr. Pedri as county manager. The “fix” the cynics refer to might just be a real advantage any accomplished employee enjoys when applying for a promotion within any organization. The cynics are putting forth their analysis of the finalists’ resumes as if the decision should be based primarily on the submitted resumes.

The finalists are scheduled to be interviewed by council, which should provide council members with additional insight into who is best suited to be the next Luzerne County manager. The cynics are alleging the future interviews are nothing more than a charade. The “charade” they allege is, possibly, the realization that Mr. Pedri enjoys a distinct advantage over the other candidates in that county council can rely on their direct observation of his job performance guiding Luzerne County government through a very challenging transition to home rule. Throughout this transition, he has consistently shown that he has the intellect, insight and temperament to serve as our next county manager.

I haven’t always agreed with Mr. Pedri; but, even in disagreements he has shown himself to be professional, respectful and fair. He has consistently shown a genuine concern for the veterans of Luzerne County and has fully supported my office in our mission to serve those who have served.

In my opinion, the county would be taking a giant step backward if council chose not to promote Mr. Pedri.
